Not the best 15 books you’ve ever read, or even ones you’d recommend to others.  Just 15 books that have made their mark on you and will always stick with you, for whatever reason.

done off the top of my head, without looking at my bookcases.

  1. alice’s adventures in wonderland and through the looking glass, lewis caroll (annotated version with notes by martin gardner). puzzles and riddles and math! the physical properties of looking glass milk!
  2. there are no children here, alex kotlowitz. my first real exposure to the daily realities of life in poverty
  3. gone with the wind, margaret mitchell. i went as scarlett for halloween in the 6th grade.
  4. little women, louisa may alcott. lasted me through a whole trip to europe and also made me cry my face off.
  5. centennial, james mitchner. holy sprawling historical novel, batman.
  6. london fields, martin amis. my first exposure to post-modern tricks like unreliable narrators. blew my mind.
  7. the bell jar, sylvia plath. there are other smart discontent women in the world!
  8. the stranger, albert camus. oh my god, existentialism!
  9. mara, daughter of the nile, eloise jarvis mcgraw. historical novel in ancient egypt with strong female lead.
  10. good omens, terry pratchett & neil gaiman. hilarious fantasy with warring angels and demons that i reference constantly.
  11. the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy (and rest of the series), douglas adams. another series i reference near-constantly. 42!
  12. the fountainhead, ayn rand. wow there are some stupid and evil people in the world who will go to great lengths to reassure themselves they’re right.
  13. gaudy night, dorothy sayers. created my addiction to upper-crust british murder mysteries. see also agatha christie.
  14. life with jeeves, p g wodehouse. created my addiction to upper-crust british comedies of errors.
  15. the brief and wondrous life of oscar wao, junot diaz. a book i can’t stop thinking about and which sent me on a spree of immigration-related novels.

1. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. First book I read. 2nd grade, teach told me if I wanted to know what came next, to read it myself.

2. The Hobbit. Much, much cooler than Narnia.

3. Lord of the Rings. Really had me going back into the book and then looking for other stuff by the author. Helped put books and authors in context in my head.

4. The Iliad (Fitzgerald trans.). Getting away from fantasy was a good thing. I still read this every other year or so.

5. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Libertarian infection point.

6. Starship Troopers. Major influence on my joining the military.

7. Time Enough for Love. Heh, heh, heh.

8. The Razor’s Edge. Helped settle the big questions for me.

9. Of Human Bondage. Very heavy book. Very painful to read but couldn’t put it down. Damn you Mildred!

10. One Hundred Years of Solitude. Is one I still read every 3-4 years. Still trying to figure it out.

11. Nostromo. I don’t know what it is about this book but I like to read it every few years.

12. A Princess of Mars. Ah, Deja Thoris…

13. Cosmic Computer. One of H. Beam Piper’s best novels. Lots of guns!

14. Lord Kalvin of Otherwhen. Another Piper story involving multiple timelines. Fun!

15. A Wizard of Earthsea. One of the first books that showed me the internal struggle within us all.
