Who: Deborah Sampson
What: An American woman who impersonated a man to be able to serve in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
When: Born December 17, 1760. Died April 29, 1827.
Where: She was born in Plympton, Massachusetts and fought her first battle in Tarrytown, New York. She eventually married in Stoughton, Massachusetts.
Why: Feeling the need to serve her part in the war, she enlisted under the name of her deceased brother, Robert Shurtleff Samson.
